Great insight! This is a kabuki dance but also a play about a father and his son lion. It is a story of the king of a hundred beasts, based on a Chinese legend. One day the father intentionally kicks his son down to the bottom of the valley. Only the cubs who can climb up the hill are recognized as the heirs, If the boy cannot climb up, he is abandoned. After his great efforts, he made it! The lion and his cub dance for joy represented by the hair-swishing dance.
@@miyabiyajapan7331 Oh, so interesting! I wish I knew more about Kabuki so that I could understand the whole thing. Anyway, I wish you guys the best, you deserve it. ♥️
A very nice video of my favorite Kabuki dance. Thanks for the clean closeup recort in the first part. But may I kindly ask with what the pretty long hairmane is made of in the neck part? From the video-recod I can figure out that aside the fluffy Yak hair, it seems to have a stiffer part right behind your heads making the round neck-part even more voluminous.
Thank you for your profoundly insightful comment! The base is shaped like a cap for a helmet and has yak hair stuck to it. To prevent it from falling off when swung around, there is a thick cord as an extension of the hairband, which is tied up tightly at the back of the head. The yak hair that hides the knot is also attached to the cover. Does this explanation make sense to you...?
@@miyabiyajapan7331 Thanks alot for the very kind comment. I've even seen images of such kinds of metal caps when a new Katsura Wig was made for a Kabuki actor. And the thick cord also runs across the chin like a bike helmet right? I have a clearer image if this by now. Thanks alot.
@@Marionettenfan Yes, ya! I forgot. A securing string is tied around the chin as well for swinging it around. Also, many wigs have a metal base, but only this lion wig is made of cloth and is soft. You know it well.
Thank you for your kind comments! You're right, Noh is an older traditional Japanese art form than Kabuki, but Kabuki is more for the common people. This SHISHI lion performance was first performed in Noh. later performed more attractively in Kabuki. This venue is a Noh theater. If you saw the video and felt a mismatch, you're right! Is there a reason why their dance moves aren't synchronized? I've seen other two Lion dances and it never is so there must be a reason? Even if they are doing the same movements the timing is different.
Thanks for the interesting opinion! If we try to understand this as a dance show, it's not synchronized and it is disqualified. The Kabuki renshishi is written as a story, and the hair waving part is the showy climax part, so to speak, my interpretation is as follows. A child who was immature grew up a lot through the ordeal of climbing a cliff. The child, who could not catch up with his father at all in his heroic hair-shaking movements, has caught up with father and overtaken father! It is natural that the motion of the two is not synchronized. It is acting. Other than that, this action of shaking the hair is not easy, so it depends on the skill of each actor. It is also not easy to make the movements synchronized, so there are times when the breathing is perfect and they are perfectly aligned for a few dozen seconds. At that time, the audience is moved.and applause naturally occurs. Perhaps this is the correct view. But does it seem strange compared to your country's culture and art? Teach me, please!
Dancers being synchronized is more of a western expectation and is very common in many western dance cultures - up to and including very large groups moving in perfect synchronicity (the russian ladies who appear to be hovering across the ground in dresses without moving their legs or feet come to mind (search "russian birch tree dance" or "beryozka dance"). But Kabuki is less of a dance and more of a narrative tale using physical performance, like a stage play, although there is sometimes dancing involved. Kabuki isn't strange once is this understood, but the lack of synchronicity can be surprising to Western people not familiar with the tradition, I suppose.
It is important to keep traditions alive, but it would be impossible without continued protection from the state and others. Not many people are interested in tradition alone, and not many people want to see it, so it is unable to become economically independent. Kabuki in Japan has always been at the heart of entertainment, so it has a part to play in trying to survive in a modern way.
